Early photography, medieval wall-paintings, and the work of Isambard Kingdom Brunel will come under the spotlight in a series of study days run by Bristol University's Department of History of Art this summer.

The Saturday courses are aimed at members of the public with an interest in art history and cost between £20 and £30 each. No specialist knowledge is required.

On Saturday 31 May 2003 a study day entitled Fox Talbot and Lacock Abbey will explore the advent of photography as an artistic medium. The class will consider the contested origins of photography in the 19th century and examine early photographic techniques developed in Britain and France. In the afternoon, there will be a visit to Lacock Abbey, the home of William Henry Fox Talbot, Victorian pioneer of photography.

On Saturday 7 June 2003 The Medieval Wall-paintings of Wiltshire will study the distinctive methods and techniques used in wall-painting and explore the wealth of examples surviving in and around the county of Wiltshire, including those at Lacock Abbey.

On Saturday 14 June 2003 Brunel and Bristol: Art and Engineering will consider Isambard Kingdom Brunel's unique contribution to Victorian architecture and engineering. The study day will celebrate the extraordinary creativity of his architectural and naval designs, including the Clifton Suspension Bridge, Temple Meads Station and the SS Great Britain.

Dr Claire O'Mahony, Director of Programmes for History of Art Continuing Education at the University said: "These study days will allow members of the public to benefit from the wealth of knowledge and expertise within the University. They are part of an ongoing programme of lectures, courses and study tours which we hope will stimulate interest in art history and enhance people's enjoyment of art."
