Exploring Computer Science

New partnerships between computer scientists at Bristol University and the region's media and high-tech businesses could spring from an event taking place tomorrow [Tuesday, April 16].

The event, called 'Exploring Computer Science', will bring leading researchers from the University into contact with venture capitalists and key players in the West of England's thriving broadcasting, animation and microprocessor design industries.

Talks and demonstrations will take place on automatic animation, virtual reality, cryptography, quantum computation and the future of microprocessor design - all fields in which the University's Department of Computer Science is at the forefront of research.

The event has been co-ordinated by the University's Bristol Enterprise Centre (BEC), which encourages collaborations with industry and the development of new business ventures based on University research.

Dr Neil Bradshaw, Director of BEC, said: 'The Bristol area is very strong in media-based industries, and the University has great research strengths in these fields.

'By bringing academics, business people and investors together in this way, we can strengthen existing ties and help consolidate the region's competitive position.'
