Professor Sidharth Jaggi - Inaugural Lecture

21 May 2024, 4.00 PM - 21 May 2024, 5.00 PM

Location: School of Mathematics, Bristol University, Fry Building, Woodland Road, Room 2.41

Title: CAN-DO-IT: Codes, Algorithms, Networks — Design & Optimisation in Information Theory

Abstract: Information theory, as the name suggests, deals with aspects of information processing — fundamental limits of information processing tasks, and algorithms that attain these limits. Applied aspects of this theory have left their mark in a plethora of facets of modern life — mobile cellular networks, data storage systems, the internet are just some of many examples. In this talk Sid will talk about his work on the fundamental limits of whispering, on how and why to deliberately mix up COVID tests, on why randomly scrambling data inside networks can be a good thing, and on how Alice can talk to Bob without Eve being able to eavesdrop or James being able to jam.

Although this event is free to attend we ask that you please book your place via the Ticket Tailor page here to allow us to monitor numbers.

There will be a social gathering for attendees after the lecture in the Fry Building common room.
