Title: Implicit bias and access to the academy

Abstract: Many groups are badly under-represented in many parts of academic life, whether as students or teachers—women and LGBTQ+ people in STEM, people of colour in the humanities, people with no family history of university participation in all areas, and so on. The phenomenon of implicit bias, revealed by social psychologists in the latter half of the twentieth century, is partly responsible for some of the barriers to access that members of these groups face, and while some early theories in social psychology have been undermined by the replication crisis, many still stand. Understanding these can go some way to dismantling these barriers. In this talk, I'll describe the current situation in the academy and our best scientific understanding of implicit bias, and I'll outline some of the ways we can work to counteract it.
