A big shout out also to Lucy McGowan who received the Bristol Plus Outstanding Award (Distinction) from the University of Bristol in recognition of work as City Coordinator for Pint of Science. As Bristol's coordinator, Lucy led a team of volunteers to organise and deliver the sell-out 2019 Pint of Science festival as well as hosting collaborative events including Pride of Science with Bristol Pride and the NASA Astronaut Tour with ISSET.

Outreach is a key part of scientific research as demonstrated by Georgina McDonald, the outreach queen, who currently acts a postgraduate Widening Participation Tutor for Life Sciences running outreach sessions to schools all across the UK and in Bristol for ages 15-18, providing students with the skills and the confidence they need to apply to higher education.

Georgie also acts as a tutor for the Brilliant Club, working on the national tutoring programme to help students catch up from the education they missed due to COVID-19, as well as designing a 7-week University style course as part of the Brilliant Club’s Scholars Programme.

Congratulations to Harry Young and his wife Emma Young (a fellow PhD student) on the arrival of adorable baby Otis, no doubt a future scientist in the making.

Well done to Will Gibbs and Georgie McDonald who recently smashed the Scale it up Valesco fitness collective Crossfit competition, with Georgie’s team placing 4th in the women’s section and Wills team placing 8th in the men’s section, the news gave us a real lift!

Looking forward to seeing what 2022 will hold for our wonderful students,

Your Wellcome reps Tiah & James
