The impact of lockdown on UK pupils

9 March 2021

A large-scale study by ImpactEd, supported by Babak Somekh, has tracked a cohort of British pupils from the beginning of lockdown in March to the end of Autumn 2020.

The study is able to show how students responded to the initial lockdown, the closure of schools and returning to school.

ImpactEd's partner schools have found this study extremely helpful in informing their pandemic response. They have started tailoring their support to students based on our data and interviews of teachers and students.

Dr Babak Somekh, Senior Lecturer in Economics at the University of Bristol, worked with ImpactEd on this study and said the following about its findings:

"The study has some encouraging results, mainly the fact that student wellbeing was relatively stable across the Spring and Summer, despite lockdowns and school closures. But there were also some troubling results worthy of further attention, mainly that female students, and students from a disadvantaged background experienced significantly higher levels of anxiety than average. ImpactEd hopes this study will at least help schools and educators be aware of these disparities, and to look at them more carefully within their own schools."

The study has been covered by The Guardian and the full report is available to read on the ImpactEd website.
