Chemistry course structure

Following the introduction of our brand new first and second year curricula in 2020 and 2021, we were pleased to unveil our third year curriculum which was implemented in September 2022.

Choice is an important aspect of our new curriculum.  Options are now available to Chemistry students across all years of study.  Most of our second year courses include choice equivalent to one-third of the second year programme of study.

Key principles that underpin the design and rationale for the new curriculum are to make it:

  • Topical and rooted in the wider industrial and societal context, equipping our students with practical examples and assessment of exactly the skills and experience they need to succeed in their future workplaces.
  • Modern, innovative and engaging with teaching delivery and assessment that makes full use of current technology using cutting-edge computing infrastructure and software.
  • Research-led, supporting our student body in becoming active learners and independent researchers working at the frontiers of international science.
  • Integrated and dynamic, adapting to new insights and technologies as they emerge.

A summary of our course structure is shown below with links to individual courses that give an overview, sample timetable and transfer possibilities.
