Summa Angelica

Saint Peter wields the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven on the title page of this late-medieval classic for confessors, the ‘Summa Angelica’ of Angelus de Clavassio, here printed in Venice in 1499. The ‘Summa’ was rejected by Luther and his disciples, and once the burning of Luther’s works had begun, Luther and Melanchthon organised their own bonfire of scholastic theology at which the ‘Summa’ was consigned to the flames. Our copy forms part of the magnificent bequest of theological works by the Reverend Theodore Innes Pocock.
