Mammoth molar

It is well-known that mammoth bones have been found in the caves and river-gravels of Somerset. However the mammoth remains from Whatley Quarry, from where this specimen was excavated, are believed to be the first record of this animal from the eastern Mendips, dating to the Late Pleistocene. This molar, discovered during the blasting process in the quarry, is a first upper true molar. It shows thirteen ridges exposed on the grinding surface and the wear of the tooth is not very far advanced.
