Isambard Owen

The first Vice-Chancellor to be appointed at the University of Bristol, Conwy Lloyd Morgan, held the role only briefly before resigning. He was succeeded by Sir Isambard Owen, nephew of engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel and son of William George Owen, chief engineer of the Great Western Railway. This painting by Howard Barron portrays Owen holding the University’s Royal Charter. It currently hangs in Senate House on Tyndall Avenue.
