Citron

The Citron, Citrus medica, originates from valleys of the foothills of the Himalaya of North East India and Western Burma. It can grow up to 7 metres and produces many sweetly scented white flowers which appear several times a year. These are followed by huge fruits, which can reach 4-5kg in weight. When ripe their skin turns a lemon-yellow. Today the fruit is used to create candied peel, but in ancient times it was hybridised with pummelo, mandarin and papedas, contributing to the range of citrus we have today.
