Bristol Whitebeam

The Bristol Whitebeam, Sorbus bristoliensis, is one of eight native trees of the genus Sorbus that are endemic to the Avon Gorge. These trees are ancient apomictic hybrids, meaning that they produce seeds without sex (i.e. clones). The Bristol Whitebeam can become a tall tree reaching twenty metres. In early summer is produces clusters of creamy white flowers. These are followed by russet-orange fruits. The tree is classed as endangered and can be seen in the Rare and Threatened Native Plant Display at the Botanic Garden.
