Why did you choose Bristol for your BSc?

The University of Bristol is a world-renowned institution with outstanding research output and this is what first drew my interest. After reading about the courses offered by the School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and visiting on an open day, the decision was very easy. Everything was organised and everyone was friendly, welcoming and enthusiastic about science! As I was interested in human biology, CMM was a perfect fit for me. Bristol itself is an amazing city, student-friendly, vibrant and with events happening all year round.

How would you sum up your experience?

The overall experience was challenging but highly rewarding. During the first two years we explored a variety of topics through focused units, all complemented by laboratory practicals. This allowed me to build a great knowledge base and skillset that made my application for industrial placement positions stand out. In final year, I could choose units based on my interests and focus on my thesis project. The academic and personal support offered by the School is incredible (true for pre-pandemic times and pandemic times)! Last but not least, I had the pleasure of meeting amazing people and making lifelong friends.

What were the staff like?

Everyone is passionate about the research and work they do. Staff are great communicators, and they are always happy to answer questions and provide guidance. This creates a wonderful environment to be in and I feel very lucky to have been taught by them.

How did your degree influence what you went on to next?

During my degree I developed an interest in cancer mechanisms and therapeutics. I am now starting my PhD at the Institute of Molecular Pathology in Vienna, investigating the molecular mechanisms of metastasis and drug resistance in osteosarcoma. The staff’s enthusiasm and encouragement, as well as gaining the theoretical and technical skills necessary here in Bristol allowed me to feel confident to pursue my interests.

What advice would you offer to students contemplating a place at Bristol?

The city is welcoming, diverse and vibrant. The University offers excellent teaching and many opportunities for career and personal development. Bristol is an amazing place to be. I cannot recommend it enough
