Met Office Academic Partnership (MOAP)

A formal collaboration across eight UK universities and the Met Office to advance the science and skill of weather and climate prediction.

The Met Office Academic Partnership (MOAP) fuses the best of UK Science to build resilience to high-impact weather events and climate change.

It was set up to reach beyond the traditional disciplines of weather and climate science and technology and recognise that to be truly innovative there is a need to forge innovative partnerships across traditional discipline boundaries.

MOAP combines research excellence from the Met Office and eight leading UK institutions (including the University of Bristol) in weather and climate science, while reaching scientists in other sectors including health, technology, artificial intelligence, and the social sciences.

Bristol MOAP

The Bristol MOAP is strategically aligned with five Met Office research and innovation themes:

  • Technology Architecture and Innovation
  • Hazard to Decision Making
  • Capturing Environmental Complexity
  • Producing, Refining and Delivering Data
  • Producing and Exploiting Ensembles

It is led by Professor Dann Mitchell, Professor of Climate Science and Met Office Joint Chair in Climate Hazards at the University of Bristol. Dann’s research focus is on extreme climate, hazards, and impacts; especially related to health.

Co-ChairDr Matt Palmeris Lead Scientist for Marine Observations, Met Officeand Associate Professor focusing on sea level change and associated societal impacts.

A core group of Theme Leads and MOAP Experts build collaborations across both the university and the Met Office in four areas of research excellence

  • Water
  • Health
  • Africa
  • Marine

Eight exceptional Met Office scientists are also employed in Faculty Positions across Science and Engineering, and Health and Life Sciences. Their expertise in climate and weather science, and direct link to both organisations, creates a unique opportunity to share knowledge and build collaboration.

We also lead a cross-MOAP working group on Climate Change and Health which draws together an expert network from across the UK and beyond.

Get in touch

We are always interested to hear from anyone who would like to get involved. Please get in touch with our Bristol MOAP Project Manager, Dr Joanne Godwin, j.godwin@bristol.ac.uk, to find out more.

University of Bristol researchers can sign up to the Cabot Institute Environmental Change theme and mailing list to get news and opportunities to get involved. Please email cabot-enquiries@bristol.ac.uk to do so.
