In 2021, NHS Blood and Transplant started a clinical trial of red blood cells grown in the laboratory from adult donor blood stem cells.

The Blood and Transplant Research Unit (BTRU) in Red Blood Cell Products is part of and funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research and is a partnership between the University of Bristol and NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) in collaboration with the University of Warwick, the University of Bath and the University of the West of England.
