IGRCT student travel grants - call for bids

16 May 2023

The deadline for applications for the current round of IGRCT student travel grants is midday, 23rd May 2023. Please send applications to artf-igrct@bristol.ac.uk.

The Institute of Greece, Rome, and the Classical Tradition invites bids from undergraduate or postgraduate students at the University of Bristol for travel which will enhance their understanding of Classics or the Classical Tradition. The deadline to apply is Tuesday 23rd of May 2023, at midday. Applications should be sent by email to artf-igrct@bristol.ac.uk.

Students may wish to plan an itinerary around places with a connection to the classical past in Britain or abroad to gain first-hand knowledge of the ancient sites. Postgraduate students or undergraduates working towards their dissertation may want to visit an archive or collection for their research into Greco-Roman antiquity or the reception of antiquity in later times and cultures. We also welcome applications from students wishing to take courses at the British Schools in Athens or Rome.

Applicants must be current students at the University of Bristol. Students from across the Faculty of Arts are encouraged to apply, but must clearly demonstrate that their planned travel is related to Classics or the Classical Tradition.

IGRCT bursaries will contribute to travel costs usually up to about £300. This may not cover the entire cost of planned travel, so applicants are encouraged to seek funding from more than one source.

Students applying for summer schools at the BSA or BSR should also apply to those institutions for bursaries: https://www.bsa.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate-course/ and https://bsr.ac.uk/research-practice-taught-courses/. All applicants should also investigate the funding sources listed at https://www.bristol.ac.uk/students/support/finances/scholarships/.

Students should consult the UoB Travel and Expenses Policy when drawing up their budgets.

Applications must include the following information:

  • Your name, your degree course, your year of study, and your academic results to date.
  • Details of where you want to travel or a brief account of the course you want to take (including dates).
  • An explanation of how this will enhance your understanding of your course of study, and, if relevant, how this will contribute to your further career plans.
  • Detailed costing of travel, accommodation, and subsistence expenses. Please note that this should comply with the UoB travel and expenses policy which sets limits on what can be claimed per day and what type of accommodation may be booked.
  • Details of any other sources of funding you have applied for or secured.
  • The names and contact details of two academic referees.

The application should not be longer than two A4 pages in 12-point font size.

Students may want to consult with their personal tutor for advice on preparing this application. Templates of successful applications are also available on request from artf-igrct@bristol.ac.uk.
