British Council call providing funding for collaborations between the UK and researchers in Mexico

Deadline: 26th June 2020

The British Council invites applications to this call which provides small scale seed funding for collaborations between the UK and researchers based in Mexico City, the State of Hidalgo, or the State of San Luis Potosi to:

  • Establish new research and innovation links, or significantly develop existing links, between research groups, departments or institutions with the potential for longer term sustainability.
  • Focus on topics or themes which have relevance to the economic development and welfare of Mexico.

Please note: Tec de Monterrey is a member of the Worldwide Universities Network and has campuses in Mexico City, and in the States of Hidalgo and San Luis Potosi.

Eligibility

  • Each proposal must have one principal applicant from the UK as well as a Principal Applicant from either Mexico City, the State of Hidalgo, or the State of San Lois Potosi.   
  • Both applicants must be leading or established researchers.

Mexico City 

Priority research themes are: Mitigation and prevention of COVID-19; Health and biomedical technologies for detection; Smart cities; Materials design and development; Urban infrastructure, Biofuels, Electromobility; Water Disaster response; Industry 4.0; Biomedical technologies; Open innovation and public policy for technological innovation

  • Funding of £50,000-£150,000 per collaboration is available.
  • Projects can be up to 12 months in. duration and will start on 17 February 2021.

State of Hidalgo 

Priority research themes are: Synchrotron light, Earth Science, Health, Energy, Biotechnology, Agriculture-Food, Data Science, 3D & Additive Manufacturing, Geotourism, Information and Communication Technologies, Artificial Intelligence, Entrepreneurship and innovation, Intellectual Property, Bioeconomics.

  • Funding of £50,000-£100,000 per collaboration is available.
  • Projects can be up to 18 months in duration and will start on 17 February 2021.

State of San Luis Potosi 

Priority themes are: Aerospace, Agriculture-Food, Automotive, Climate Change, Energy, Logistics, Mining, Chemistry, Health, Tourism.

  • Funding of £50,000-£100,000 per collaboration is available.
  • Projects can be up to 12 months in. duration and will start on 17 February 2021.

Official Development Assistance (ODA) requirements

  • The Newton Fund aims to develop the long-term sustainable economic development and welfare of the partner country.  Projects must clearly demonstrate the expected benefits and impacts for the partner country(ies) concerned. 
  • All proposals must articulate a plausible route to positive impact within a short to medium term timeframe (within 10 years).
  • Due diligence – Applicants must inform their Assistant Finance Business Partner of any potential partners that may receive funding through the grant as soon as possible. 

Potential applicants should discuss with their School Research Director whether the funding available meets their School’s current criteria.
