A pneumothorax

sometimes also referred to as a “collapsed lung”, describes the presence of air in the space between the chest wall and the outside of the lung. A pneumothorax can be caused by trauma to the chest, underlying damage to the lung, or can occur spontaneously, and usually causes sudden breathlessness and pain.
