HIPPY- Understanding how choices of implants are made by surgeons, hospitals, and patients

What we are doing

In this work package our aims are:

  • to better understand current practice and factors that influence surgeons’ choice of hip implants

  • to explore what drives hospitals’ decision making when purchasing implants.
  • to understand people’s knowledge and information needs in relation to their artificial hip, and their hip replacement surgery, and to find out what outcomes after surgery are the most important to them.

How we are doing it

We are going to conduct three studies:

  • We will conduct a national questionnaire survey of orthopaedic hip surgeons to learn more about their current practices and implant choices.
  • We will carry out in-depth interviews with people having hip  replacementsurgeons, and hospital procurement staff to explore their views about implants and about their expectations of surgery.
  • We will carry out a discrete choice survey with people who have either already had hip replacement or are on the waiting lists, to learn more about their expectations from surgery and what they value the most after surgeryWe will repeat this survey with surgeons to find out if their expectations are aligned with expectations of patients.

What we aim to achieve

We want to have an in-depth understanding owhat influencesurgeon’s choice of implants, as well as patients' understanding of implant choices available and their expectations of hip replacement surgery

Our findings will be used to

  • identify surgeons who are willing to participate in the HIPPY trial
  • identify barriers and facilitators to any potential recommended changes in clinical practice that might be made based on the findings from the trial, to help with the implementation of these changes.
  • identify the information that patients want and need when awaiting hip replacement surgery.
