Our People

Professor Ramanan is an Honorary Professor at the University of Bristol and a consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. He is joint lead for research (Division of Women and Children) at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, and the Co-Chair of the NIHR CRN/ARUK Paediatric Rheumatology Clinical Studies Group. He is also the Clinical Research Specialty Co-Lead for Paediatrics for the Clinical Research Network: West of England

Dr Sarah Clarke is an Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Bristol’s School of Population Health Sciences, as well as a paediatric registrar in the Bristol region. She has a background in immunology, centred around immune function and immune phenotypes in autoimmune disorders. More recently her work has focussed on harnessing large scale ‘omic data to probe cause and consequence of immune mediated diseases, completing her PhD under the supervision of Prof Caroline Relton, Prof Athimalaipet Ramanan and Dr Gemma Sharp. Her current research explores how multi-omic platforms can help us to understand long term health outcomes in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and uveitis (particularly cardiovascular health), and identify novel drug targets and prognostic biomarkers.

Dr Christine Chew is an Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Bristol’s School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, while completing her paediatric training at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. She developed an interest in macrophage immunology while studying kidney macrophage function during her PhD in the laboratories of Professors Tracy Hussell and Rachel Lennon, which was funded by Versus Arthritis. Her current research explores how we can design better treatments through using omics platforms to understand the immune landscape and key accessory pathways that become dysfunctional in childhood arthritis.

She has a particular interest in paediatric rheumatology and is currently working with Professor Ramanan, Dr. Anu Goenka and Dr. Christine Chew to explore gene expression changes after treatment with pamidronate in Chronic Non-infectious Osteomyelitis (CNO).
