Course summary

Inspired by the Royal Academy of Engineering, this in-depth course aims to develop high-calibre engineers who can lead complex engineering projects that are vital to modern society.

After a broad, common first year, you can choose to specialise in mechanical, aerospace or civil engineering, studying technical units alongside students from these other engineering degrees.

Unique modules in the first two years of this programme provide essential skills in problem definition, conceptual design, optioneering and manufacturing/construction processes.

The third year provides the opportunity to take a paid placement in industry, which forms an assessed part of the course and is closely monitored by the University, allowing you to start working towards becoming a Chartered Engineer. You will be given responsibilities similar to graduate entrants. We will support you in applying for a placement.

Upon returning to the University in year four you can choose from a wide range of technical modules from across the Faculty of Engineering. This gives you the chance to gain further technical expertise in your chosen specialisation and a broader learning experience in other subjects, such as artificial intelligence, numerical modelling, programming, and innovation and entrepreneurship.

A group research and design project also forms a major component of the final year. The project is conducted with one of our industrial partners and you can choose from a range of topics, such as robotics, manufacturing, renewable energy, future cities and sustainable transport.

Our degree is accredited by numerous bodies under licence from the Engineering Council. An accredited degree provides you with the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Accreditations

Our Engineering Design with Study in Industry BEng is approved by major professional bodies in the UK (IED, IStructE, IMechE, RAeS, IHE, ICE, IET, CIHT, PWI) so as a a graduate you can gain exemptions from a number of their examinations or credits for prior learning.

Course structure

First-year students studying Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and Engineering Design all start their degree with a broad knowledge of the fundamentals and a command of the skills that underpin modern engineering.

You will share common units with your peers in other disciplines and work on an interdisciplinary project, based on global challenges and inspired by Engineers Without Borders.

You will meet and work closely with more people from the start of your degree, broadening your social circle and long-term professional network. Interdisciplinary working is now the norm in industry, and good understanding of disciplines other than your own will serve you well when you enter the workplace.

Starting your degree with a broad foundation of knowledge will expand your frame of reference, enabling you to be more creative as you progress with your programme and become more specialist in later years of study. The skills-based approach will provide you with technical abilities that will enable you to be successful in your degree and your career.

Requirements are as for A-levels, where you can substitute a non-subject specific grade for the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate at that grade.
Requirements for principal subjects are as for A-level, where D1/D2 is A*, D3 is A, M1/M2 is B, and M3 is C.
