Innovation at Bristol
Do you want to change the world? Our innovation courses will set you on your way.
Innovation is the application of creative solutions to real-world problems - taken all the way to delivery.
Students from varied academic backgrounds bring together their knowledge and passion to identify social and commercial opportunities. Staff from industry and academic experts teach the skills to collaborate, research and implement real projects for real clients, turning ideas into practice.
You may want to design products or services; dream up new forms of social interaction; start a company supplying innovative products or services; establish a social enterprise; or bring your own ideas to life.
You will experience working with others who bring their own specialist knowledge, background and ways of thinking to the course, as well as building an understanding of how to design products and services. Working with external clients on projects they value, learn how to develop your own ideas and plans, evaluate innovative solutions and present them to gain support.
What made Bristol stand out was its inclusivity - there is an opportunity for everyone to get involved. I enjoy the external speakers who come in to share their experiences, deepening the interface between academia and industry.
Career prospects

After graduating, you will be able to progress to careers that require an honours degree in your chosen subject specialism. However, you will also be equipped to do much more: to innovate; to work in teams with people from different specialisms, backgrounds and cultures; and to create and implement entrepreneurial plans to take ideas forward. These skills are highly valued by all organisations, large or small, local or global.
You may graduate as a member of a new venture that you and your fellow students have created, or you may decide to join an existing venture. Whatever you decide, you will be well equipped to continue building on your entrepreneurial and innovation experience.
Course structure

In your first two years you will spend two thirds of your time in your core discipline and one third studying innovation. In later years you spend a greater proportion of your time studying innovation.
You will start by learning how to set about designing products and services, working in interdisciplinary teams with others who will bring their own specialist backgrounds and ways of thinking. You will find out about design thinking, which combines creative and analytic approaches to design and involves collaboration across disciplines.
You will explore systems thinking, which is a way of understanding whole systems, seeing relationships and patterns of change.
In your second year you will find out how to design to meet human needs, working with real clients. You will also learn about the technological, social and political influences on design and innovation. In your third year you will explore innovative and disruptive ideas. You will learn how to research the potential of new technologies to introduce change.
Your final-year project allows you to pull together all you have learned and create your own enterprise. You will find how to assess the feasibility, sustainability and desirability of a proposed plan and apply this to your project. Your team will build a demonstrator and put together a plan to take it forward.
You'll combine undergraduate and postgraduate study into one with our four-year master’s degrees. Become an expert in your discipline while learning how to create new products and services, work in teams across specialisms, and create and implement entrepreneurial plans.
Challenge-led learning

Our studio-based, challenge-led learning space allows staff to interact with students, creating a dynamic learning environment which breaks away from the traditional lecture/seminar approach.
As part of the course you will be able to interact with designers, entrepreneurs, and industry professionals in the classroom and our dedicated prototyping studio. The Centre for Innovation connects students with careers professionals, delivers support to those interested in entrepreneurship, and is well connected with regional business support structures and the small businesses community.

By the time you graduate, you will have a portfolio of work ranging from live client projects to planning your own venture. You will have learned how to evaluate the potential of your product or service and how to finance it. You will be supported by groups within the University and external partners who are at the forefront of innovation. All the way through your course you will be able to draw on a network of advisers who are involved in starting up or investing in new innovations.
What kind of student would this course suit?
We are looking for bright, creative people from a wide range of backgrounds. We will provide an innovative curriculum and an environment that values rigour, creativity, risk-taking, communication and teamwork.
You will have a serious interest in your chosen specialism and a desire to pursue it to a high level. You will need to understand it well enough to explain it to people with different specialisms when you are working in your collaborative teams, and you will want to apply your discipline knowledge to real challenges and opportunities.
You will be motivated by your potential to create, innovate and share ideas with others. You may already have done things that demonstrate this or you may only just be realising that this is what you want to do.
How is this course taught and assessed?
Innovation and entrepreneurship skills are taught and learned by repeated practice throughout the four years of these integrated master's degrees. All the innovation units are assessed solely by coursework; other methods of assessment will vary depending on which degree subject you have chosen.
You will be required to undertake various innovation or entrepreneurial challenges. These involve different forms of assessment, including collaborative group work, individual reflection and presentations, which allow you to take risks and learn from both failures and successes. This powerful and critical way of learning will equip you with the skills to realise which innovations and entrepreneurial opportunities to take forward.
You will be supported by academic staff, external mentors and entrepreneurial advisers throughout your time at Bristol.
