Leadership Coaching

Gary qualified as a leadership coach in 2018 and is an Associate Certified Coach of the International Coaching Federation, and in 2022 he qualified with the Global Team Coaching Institute as a Team Coaching Foundations Certified Coach. He is an experienced leadership development facilitator with over 20 years’ experience as an academic and senior leader in Higher Education. Most recently he was employed by Advance HE and worked closely with Welsh higher education providers, Welsh Government, HEFCW and Universities Wales to ensure the Welsh higher education sector was being supported in Leadership, Management, Governance, Learning & Teaching, and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

Gary’s early career started in the telecommunications industry before retraining as a secondary school teacher, which led him into lecturing in Further Education before his higher education roles. He was a published management academic and Director of Research at Loughborough University for 10 years, and Director of Research, Business & Innovation at Aberystwyth University for over 10 years. Gary had experience leading a team of fifty people; merging two departments; managing Aberystwyth University’s REF2014 submission. He was appointed to the REF Equality & Diversity Advisory Panel in May 2017; and was an external examiner at Loughborough University School of Business & Economics and the Limerick Institute of Technology.

Gary has been facilitating leadership programmes since his time as a Further Education lecturer and consequently at Loughborough University where he was Programme Leader on three post graduate management programmes and Director of Research for the Centre of Automotive Management. Most recently Gary was Programme Director for Advance HE’s Strategic Leadership Programme and the Wales Further & Higher Education Executive Leaders Programme. Gary also designs and delivers researcher development programmes, and is an Associate with Advance HE and Vitae.

Gary has used his academic background, experience as an introverted leader and coaching leaders to develop his own model of leadership, which clients often find a useful starting point for exploring and development their leadership qualities.
