This Bristol Girl really Can!

2016 was the second year running that Sport, Exercise & Health and Bristol SU decided to take part in the Sport England initiative This Girl Can, which aims to get more women taking part in sport and physical activity. This Bristol Girl can week ran from 7-13 November, with a huge range of free activities for female students to try.

Whilst female students at Bristol have never been ones to shy away from getting involved, with just over 50% of participants in physical activity in 2015-16 being female at the University, we still wanted to offer new opportunities to students who might be looking for a way to exercise in a fun and social setting, with 75% of women wanting to be more active according to Sport England.

This year we provided an extensive programme of activities including heart-pumping dancercise, social swimming, a women-only weights room take over, 'ninja-training' self-defence and a giant shake-it-like-Beyonce mass Zumbathon, all jointly run by Sport, Exercise & Health and Bristol SU.

Aerospace Engineering student Alex Behrouzi says of This Bristol Girl Can "You'll never leave a sports session wishing you hadn't gone. This Girl Can is such an important movement to help girls gain confidence and feel good about themselves, during sport and in everyday life".

We also teamed up with #ThisBUCSGirlCan, showcasing some top-class matches from our women's sports clubs on the Wednesday afternoon. The highlight being the showdown match for Bristol Women's rugby 1st team against Cardiff Met.

With over 1000 students taking part in the many activities on offer, more than a 100% increase on last year's attendance, plans are already underway to make This Bristol Girl Can 2017 even bigger and better.
