Aimed at practising translators at any stage of their career and at language enthusiasts who want to explore the world of literary translation, Bristol Translates offers the opportunity to work with leading professional translators to translate texts across different literary genres.

Once again this year: in addition to workshops for those translating into English, we are also offering workshops for translators working out of English.

New this year: we are also offering workshops for translators working from Swedish and Urdu.

Another innovation for 2025: we are offering a two-day pass for the professional development talks and panel sessions on Tuesday 8th and Thursday10th July for translators not attending the language workshops. See the programme here and click here to apply.

Bristol Translates summer school takes place entirely online, making it accessible to participants around the world. Workshop groups are limited to a maximum of 12 students. The programme features language-specific translation workshops, both into and out of English, as well as hands-on sessions about various aspects of today’s translation sector, industry talks and professional and networking sessions.

In addition to literary translators themselves, Bristol Translates speakers include publishers, agents, editors, researchers and writers. Participants have had the opportunity to pitch their project to decision-makers in publishing, and take part in exclusive competitions.

Scholarships

Bristol Translates Summer School is pleased to be able to offer Scholarships, thanks to support from our funders.

Three scholarships covering the registration fee are available for the Catalan workshop. To apply, submit your application to Bristol Translates by Wednesday 7 May. Scholarship applications will be judged on those whose literary translation practice will benefit most from attendance at the summer school.

All other Scholarships applications are now closed for 2025.

The workshops were incredibly helpful and one of the best teaching experiences I've ever had.

I feel very lucky to have been able to participate in Bristol Translates. It exemplifies the friendliness of the literary translation community and its generosity in sharing advice. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate with and learn from like-minded translation enthusiasts. The week has increased my confidence in my own abilities and I have come away enthused and encouraged about the prospect of a career in literary translation. I know what my next steps are and I feel optimistic. Thank you!
