POSTPONED - Joint Hub/BPI event on Gambling, Poverty and Marginalisation

Postponed

15 November 2023, 1.30 PM - 15 November 2023, 4.00 PM

4.10, 35 Berkeley Square, Bristol

This internal University of Bristol event is co-hosted by the Bristol Poverty Institute’s (BPI) Livelihoods and Debt Research Cluster and the Bristol Hub for Gambling Harms Research. We invite University of Bristol academics at all career stages and from any relevant discipline to join us for a couple of hours of thought-provoking discussion on the links between gambling-related debt,  poverty, and other areas including illicit livelihoods, addiction, and criminal behaviours.

Our fantastic panel of speakers bring together cross-disciplinary expertise and perspectives. We are delighted to be joined by:

  • Professor Sharon Collard, Director of the Personal Finance Research Centre, Co-Director of the Bristol Hub for Gambling Harms Research, and Member of the Bristol Poverty Institute Advisory Board. Sharon works across the Gambling Harms Hub and BPI, and is therefore perfectly positioned to provide an introduction to the key themes, issues and topics at the intersection of gambling harms, debt and poverty.
  • Ms Sara Davies, Senior Research Fellow in the Personal Finance Research Centre and Co-Lead of BPI’s Livelihoods and Debt Research Cluster. Sara will speak about gambling and debt, and how this can intersect with dimensions of poverty.
  • Philip Newall, Lecturer in the School of Psychology. Philip will talk about gambling and risk.
  • Guy Hawker, Service Deliver Manager and Chaz Singh, Community Engagement Lead at ARA

Chaz will speak about gambling within marginalised communities and Guy will speak about gambling and homelessness.

The draft programme of activities is:

13:30-14:00     Lunch on arrival
14:00-14:30     Introduction and speaker presentations
14:30-15:20     Room discussion

We look forward to seeing you there!
