Jake Biele - Siloton Ltd

Siloton Limited – 3-month Secondment

Siloton is a Bristol-based photonics start-up founded by alumni of the Quantum Engineering CDT. Leveraging integrated photonics, Siloton aims to bring an end to preventable blindness by making crucial eye imaging technology more accessible. During a 3-month secondment, Jake gained valuable exposure to important skills required in founding a photonics start-up. These include financing, fundraising, core-team building, market research, IP strategy, technical development strategy, and networking. In return, Jake was able to use the skills acquired during his Quantum Engineering PhD to guide technological development and strategy by helping predict and optimise device performance. Jake was additionally able to complete preliminary market research to identify near-term markets and their accessibility.

Fig 1: Above shows an image of the back of the eye (the retina) and demonstrates the type of image produced by the Siloton device. The layers within the retina structure give information on the eye health and therefore on current and future patient quality of vision.
