Since 2012 we have offered staff at Bristol University the opportunity to take an 8 week course in mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT).
Are the courses just for university staff in the medical faculty?
Yes, at the moment the courses are just available to staff.
How can I access the MBCT course?
Once you have checked the latest dates for the next course and made sure you can attend all 8 sessions, you can email Dr Alice Malpass directly requesting a place on the next upcoming course, a.malpass@bristol.ac.uk.
Is my attendance confidential?
Yes. No-one is told you are taking the mindfulness course.
What do I have to do before the course starts?
The mindfulness teacher will send you a pre-course questionnaire to explore your reasons for attending as well as your experience of any recent upsetting events.
Does everyone who wants to attend the course get a place?
Courses are popular so prompt booking is advised. The pre-course questionnaires help the mindfulness teacher identify anyone for whom the course may be inappropriate for at this time. This is because the 8 week course is a big commitment in terms of time and can sometimes be challenging and for this reason it is best not to undertake the course when life events feel particularly overwhelming. We usually recommend seeking one-to-one support and then coming back to take the mindfulness course later in the year.
What do we learn on the 8 week course?
Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy is a manualised course. At Bristol we teach a slightly adapted version of the manualised course to make it relevant and sensitive to the particular needs of staff doing the course in a workplace setting.
Is the course free for staff? How much does the course cost?
At the moment the courses are not free for staff. However, we have had members of staff who have been experiencing job related stress who have had supportive line managers and their place has been paid as part of staff training and development.
We currently charge £180 for the 8 week course. This includes weekly handouts, CD guidance and a course folder. We have a limited number of places that are available for PhD students or part time members of staff, please get in touch for details.
