Capitalism, Neoliberalism and Poverty
Online
Join us for this Bristol Poverty Institute (BPI) online event to explore how issues relating to capitalism and poverty intersect, what it means for society, and what options there are to tackle challenging repercussions such as inequality. This event will kick off with presentations on the topic including one that touches on 'disaster capitalism' and its underwriters, capitalism and neoliberalism, and another that will look at a potential solution in Universal Basic Income (UBI). We will then move in to a discussion where everyone will be welcome to share their thoughts. Please register for free for this event via our ticket page: Capitalism, Neoliberalism and Poverty
Aim of the event
The aim of the event is to bring together academics, the BPI community, and anyone interested in exploring the association between capitalism and poverty, and provide an online space for new connections and discussion.
Speaker presentation titles
- “Capitalism, neoliberalism and disaster capitalism” (Joe Jezewski - Bristol Poverty Institute, University of Bristol)
- “The health case for basic income in a capitalist context” (Remco Peters - Research Associate, School for Policy Studies, University of Bristol)
- “Capitalism, poverty and basic income” (Neil Howard - Reader, Department of Social & Policy Sciences, University of Bath)
Who should attend
We encourage anyone with an interest in any aspect of capitalism, neoliberalism, UBI, poverty and social justice to attend. So whether you are an academic at the University of Bristol, an academic at another institution, friends and colleagues of the BPI, an NGO or community organisation member or anyone else, please do come along.
Please be aware that the organisers plan to take screenshots during the event, which we may share online (including our social media feeds, websites and/or blogs). If you are uncomfortable with this, please notify a member of the team on the day and we will endeavour to try and avoid including you in any screenshots. Alternatively, please switch off your camera. We cannot guarantee you won’t be in any images, but we will try and avoid taking screenshots where you are clearly visible.
