Who can take part?

Click above to watch a video of Dr Aine Burns, Co-investigator of the Trial, discussing her experience of looking after people with kidney disease.

In order to take part a person must have kidney function less than 15% and:

  • Be older than 65 years if they have other health problems, such that

    • They need to spend more than half of their days in a chair or bed, and/or

    • Have two or more other conditions, such as diabetes, cancer, heart, liver or lung disease

  • Be older than 80, whether or not they have other health problems.

These criteria have been chosen because studies have shown that people who meet them live about the same amount of time whether they prepare for responsive management or prepare for renal dialysis.

We aim to recruit 512 patients from at least 16 kidney units across the UK. Patients who are eligible to take part will be told about the study by their usual kidney team. The UK renal (kidney) units that are recruiting patients can be seen here. Patients will not be able to take part if their hospital is not recruiting patients. If someone is interested in taking part in the Prepare for Kidney Care study and their centre is on this list, they should contact their renal team about the study.

A person cannot take part if they cannot weigh up the pros and cons well enough to decide whether to join the study, for example if they have dementia.
