Commons Select Committee calls for ideas from the public

14 November 2018

The Science and Technology Committee has decided again to create an open opportunity for the science community and the wider public to suggest science and technology areas for scrutiny.

This is your opportunity to get involved and suggest what issues the Committee should be exploring.

Proposals for inquiries

Inquiry proposals will be considered on the basis of merit. The Committee would be interested to receive proposals from people it wouldn’t normally hear from, and for suggestions for work in areas that might otherwise escape its attention.

A list of inquiries that the Committee has already held in this Parliament is available on the Committee's website.

Proposals should outline in less than 200 words the nature of the issue that the Committee should explore, why it deserves attention, and how Government policy in this area could be developed or improved.

The Committee will also accept proposals in the form of a video tweeted to the Committee’s account (@CommonsSTC) using the #MyScienceInquiry hashtag (up to one minute in length). The Committee is not able to take up individual cases or complaints.

If you made a submission to the previous Committee’s ‘My Science Inquiry’ and you would like the Committee to re-consider your proposal you should resubmit your idea to this inquiry.

#MyScienceInquiry

A selection of the proposals will be shortlisted for an opportunity to give a 10-minute pitch to the Committee in person at a public session to be held on Tuesday 8 January 2019.

Written suggestions can be submitted through the ‘My Science Inquiry’ page.

The deadline for proposals is 23.59 on Thursday 29 November 2018.

The Committee values diversity and seeks to ensure this where possible. We encourage members of underrepresented groups to submit a proposal.

The Committee’s predecessor Committee held a similar exercise in 2016/17.
