Searching for Exotic Variability: The Hunt for Quasi-Periodic Eruptions

AGN variability is ubiquitous in the universe, and is well established, but in 2019 a new pattern of never-before-seen variability was discovered. Characterised by short, violent, changes in luminosity and quasi-periodic timescales, the phenomenon of Quasi-Periodic Eruptions was born. In the years since then a further four sources were discovered exhibiting such eruptions, in archival data and through the eROSITA survey, but many questions about their nature remain unresolved. Ultimately, with limited data on these five sources, to solve these mysteries there is only one way forward: we need to find more.
