Bristol Undergraduate Physics Students Feed Into Circus & Physics Workshop Plans

Circus Workshops Poster

29 October 2021

On Wednesday 27th of October we hosted a training and collaboration session for a group of Undergraduate Physics Students who have volunteered to help with upcoming Circus & Physics workshops.

These Circus & Physics workshops have been developed by Oddly Moving Circus Theatre in partnership with the Institute of Physics and Turtle Key Arts, with support from the Ogden trust. Including input from undergraduate Physics students at the University of Bristol. The workshops will be delivered by Grania (the Artistic Director of Oddly Moving) and one physics undergrad, targeting 12 - 14yr olds reflecting KS3 curriculum in a 1 hour workshop.

Oddly Moving are offering a number of workshops for free in Bristol and surrounding areas, as well as in tour locations (Worthing, North London, Salford, Basingstoke, Barnsley and Hull) and are taking bookings from October 2021. The workshops use movement and skill-based teaching to show how Physics works in practice. They are interested in working with young people who (IOP research says) are less engaged with physics, these are; girls or young people who are lgbtq+ or from minority ethnic backgrounds or from low socio-economic backgrounds or with disabilities (or an intersection of the above).

The workshops have emerged from an ongoing collaboration with the IOP who have been the science advisors on the show they are creating about the greek myth Atlas. They have been learning about gravity & forces and exploring how these concepts can work as metaphors for the stories we're telling. They would like to share their process in learning about how these physics principles work and how we can look at them creatively.
