We are committed to good employment practices and creating a supportive, inclusive working environment for all our staff. We are striving to address the unequal representation of women in science, improve career progression for female academics.
I regard Equality and Diversity as core to the mission of the School of Physics. We need all the best talents in our pursuit of excellence in research and education.
Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity Committee
The school’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity Committee meets regularly to discuss the best ways to improve the school working environment and share good practice from across the University. It provides a point of contact for our staff and students as well as external individuals to raise issues or ideas concerning LGBT, Income, Gender, Disability or Racial inequality issues.
We hold an Athena SWAN Bronze Award. The Equality Challenge Unit's Athena SWAN Charter recognises commitment to advancing women’s careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine employment in higher education and research. We are currently working towards obtaining a Silver Award.
Juno Practitioner Award
We hold an Institute of Physics’ Juno Practitioner Award, which recognises and rewards schools and departments that can demonstrate they have taken action to address the under-representation of women in university physics and to encourage better practice for both women and men.
Recruitment and selection
To ensure fairness of opportunity, it is important to consider the potential effects of unconscious bias on the recruitment process. We ask all our staff to complete the Effective Recruitment and Selection course before they begin the hiring process.
