Biography
Since completing my PhD, I have been hired as a Lecturer in Sociology in the School of Sociology, Politics, and International Studies for 2020-2021. I also worked as a Research Associate at Lancaster University (2020-2021) where I was involved with the CLASS: Creating LGBT+ Affirming School Environments project, where we are conducting a realist evaluation of anti-homophobic/transphobic/biphobic bullying interventions.
Since autumn 2021, I have been acting as a Lecturer in Gender at the University of Bristol. I was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in 2024.
Research interests
Rosie Nelson (they/them) is a Senior Lecturer in Gender at the University of Bristol. Their work is driven by a desire to develop intellectually rigorous and methodologically sound research which facilitates social equity, safety, and flourishing. Their substantive research interests include sexuality, gender, queerness, transness, digital society, and qualitative research methodologies. They also have a keen interest in pedagogical research and developments, particularly as it relates to developing equitable and accessible classrooms.
Their research has been published variously in Qualitative Methods, Sexualities, Journal of Sociology, and Cultural Sociology. Their first book, Making Space for Bi+ Identities, was published by Routledge in 2023. Their second book Feminist and Queer Approaches to Qualitative Research Methods will be published by SAGE in early 2025. Rosie is currently working on a project related to ethics, researcher reflexivity, positionality, and safety with a wider team of academics across the United Kingdom.
Rosie’s teaching interests include sexuality, gender, and social science research methods. They have been nominated for teaching excellence several times, and have attained the qualification of Higher Education Academy Fellow. They seek to develop feminist pedagogical methods in their classroom, including diversifying assessment types and adopting different approaches to discussion within the seminar room. Their approach to assessment has been used as a good practice case study for the University of Bristol.
Rosie has wide ranging experience of supervising students at undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD level. The latter experience has involved supervising funded and unfunded students, part-time and full-time students, and cross-institutionally and cross-disciplinarily. Rosie developed a PhD Advanced Qualitative Research Methods training course for all incoming PhD students across the faculty, helping to develop their research skill sets ahead of any empirical feedback.
Rosie Nelson has presented nationally and internationally as a keynote speaker, panellist and regular conference presenter. They have reviewed for a range of international high ranking journals and publishers, and have also acted as a peer reviewer for funding bodies such as the UKRI and ESRC. Their work and commentary has been published in the Conversation, and they have engaged with different media and policy groups in relation to their work.
Rosie has successfully led and developed various research groups and communities, including Critically Queer [inactive], Queer Frontiers [active] and the Sexualities Reading Group [active]. Developing a community of sexuality scholars is critical to Rosie’s practice, research, and political commitment to this field of study. In addition to these groups, Rosie is also a member of the Gender Research Centre steering group, and the Pedagogy research group.

Teaching
I have a wide range of teaching experience at the University of Bristol across all years and groups. At present, I am a convenor on the following units:
1) Data Matters: a first year UG unit focused on introducing students to core concepts and ideas within the sociological discipline
2) Introduction to Qualitative Research Methods in the Social Sciences: PGT core unit delivered across the faculty, which focuses on graduate level training in qualitative research methods
3) Queering Sexuality and Gender: UG 3rd year unit exploring sociological understandings and applications of queer theory
4) Advanced Qualitative Research Methods: A PGR methodological training unit exploring key discussions, analytic approaches, and philosophical underpinnings in qualitative research
