I’m doing a PhD in sociology (ESRC +3), looking at how the academic book is constructed by different actors including researchers, policymakers, publishers, and other market intermediaries. My argument is that the ways in which we collectively imagine, produce and use texts are being affected by digitalization, and that the very idea of ‘the book’ is being destabilized. I’m mostly working with ideas from science and technology studies (STS), but I also draw on cultural and economic sociology, organization studies, and book history. When I’m not doing my PhD I work for the local university press, commissioning books on research methods and practices, and social studies of science and technology.
