Research interests
My research focuses on animation, film history and theory, intermediality, and the relationship between cinema and modernity. My first book, Film and Fairy Tales: The Birth of Modern Fantasy (I. B. Tauris, 2013) focused on the deep relationships between fairy tales, spectacle and cinema during its first decades. My research focus has since turned to animation. I was Principal Investigator for a five year project funded by the European Research Council, entitled "The Idea of Animation," which examined the emergence of animation from 1915-1940 in France, the United States and the United Kingdom. Tracing how ideas of animation were developed in relation to other media forms and cultural contexts, the research for this project has led to a number of articles and my second book, New York's Animation Culture: Advertising, Art, Design and Film, 1939-1940 (Palgrave, 2019). My research continues to develop around issues of animation history, theory and intermediality.
