Research interests
My research is at the intersection of Marxism and constructivism. I received (with no correction) my PhD in International Political Economy (IPE) at King's College London (KCL), MA in IPE at KCL, and BSc in Economics at Royal Holloway, University of London. My PhD - "Gramsci in post-1978 China: Negotiation of Chinese intellectuals' role in the process of socio-economic and political transformation" - examines Gramsci's theory of hegemony and the light it sheds on the changing relationship between state and society and the roles and identities of intellectuals in the process of China's socio-economic and political transformation since 1978.
My current research consists of three veins:
1. Gramsci and the Socialist State-society
This involves grappling with Gramsci's political thought and developing new interpretations.
2. China and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)
This combines area/regional studies and IPE & international relations (IR), covering China's political economy and international relations. I have been studying the ongoing rhetorical dialogue between Marxism and "socialism with Chinese characteristics," corruption and power in China, China's health care reform (including the Sanming health care model), the expansion of higher education in China, and BRI.
3. Pedagogical strategies for diversifying and decolonising work
I am devoted to evaluating pedagogical strategies that pursue diversifying and decolonising initiatives and examining the practice of critical pedagogy.
