Research interests
My research specialises in experimenting with different approaches to war and violence in texts. I work primarily with Roman history and Latin literature, but draw from modern war and security studies, and critical theory, to gain a deeper understanding of how we write, think and talk about the bodies embroiled in conflict.
I teach Roman history, Latin, and classical literature in Bristol's Department of Classics and Ancient History.
I am currently working on a collaborative project exploring military health, ancient and modern. What does it mean to be 'fit' for war? How do those in the armed forces think about their health and wellbeing when preparing for conflict? Outputs will include a public engagement workshop series, articles and chapters. In tandem, I am preparing my PhD thesis for publication as a monograph, Arms and the Many: Multiplicity in Lucan's Civil War (Bloomsbury, forthcoming), which explores the representation of military bodies in Latin war narratives. I am also a passionate advocate for outreach and widening participation, which involves providing teacher training and resources to encourage a more holistic, critical approach to histories of war in the classroom.
Research interests: war, security, bodies, health, disability, Roman history, Latin literature, military cultures, poststructuralism, feminist theory.
