Research interests
I am a vascular surgeon with a research interest in peripheral arterial disease. My research impacts on patient care by informing national and international guidelines to change NHS practice. My current research is focussed on risk factor modification for the most serious manifestation of peripheral arterial disease, chronic limb threatening ischaemia.
I am the chief investigator of the NIHR HTA funded CLARITY (CLopidogrel, Aspirin and RIvaroxaban after revascularIsation with angioplasTY) randomised trial examining antithrombotic regimens after peripheral arterial endovascular intervention. CLARITY is the first fully powered randomised trial to investigate commonly used antithrombotic therapies following endovascular lower limb arterial intervention for chronic limb threatening ischaemia. I collaborate on other NIHR funded research including the PLACEMENT randomised trial examining the use of perineural catheters after major lower limb amputation. I am lead for vascular surgery clinical research at North Bristol NHS Trust where we have successfully recruited into multiple national and international studies.
I am the systematic review section editor of the European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery which is the highest impact Vascular Surgery journal. I sit on the European Society for Vascular Surgery guidelines steering committee which is responsible for producing clinical practice guidelines in vascular surgery. There are important as there are few NICE guidelines relevant to vascular surgery. I chaired the antithrombotic guideline for the European Society of Vascular Surgery where much of my previous antithrombotic research fed into recommendations.
I am co-lead for the Aneurysm, Peripheral Arterial Disease and Stroke unit of the MSc in Translational Cardiovascular Medicine.
