Biography
Before joining Bristol, I was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the International Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, Netherlands. My project, part of the Vital Cities and Citizens programme at Erasmus University Rotterdam, examined citizenship formation among Sudanese refugees in Europe during the time of the Sudanese revolution in 2019. I also worked on the politics of security and refuge in the context of migration from the global south to Europe. My research involves multiple qualitative methods including social media analysis, ethnography, interviews, and collaborative creative practice.
This postdoctoral research followed from my PhD, which I received from the Global Development Institute, The University of Manchester. Here, I examined the role of refugee-diasporas in peacebuilding in Sudan, including their role in resistance movements to international interventions and government-led initiatives. After my PhD, I held research associate roles at the Effective States and Inclusive Development Research Centre, and the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute.
