Research interests
My research interests lie in exploring the intersections between bureaucracy and violence within border control sites and systems. I engage with feminist theories of violence and resistance to examine how the sites and practices which constitute asylum-seeking are made, negotiated and resisted, and draw from creative and participatory research methods.
I recently completed an ESRC postdoctoral research fellowship at Newcastle University, developing my research on Home Office immigration reporting and created an interactive website which explores the lived experience of reporting for asylum seekers in Britain: reporting-sounds.uk. Before this, I worked at Bristol University as a Research Associate on the ESRC-funded project 'Hidden Narratives on Transnational Organised Crime in West Africa'.
I studied my PhD in Human Geography at the University of Exeter (2015-2020), and alongside my PhD, I worked as a research assistant on a European Council funded project, exploring the disparities for migrants across Europe in accessing justice within asylum appeal hearings. I am coauthor on a report entitled Experiencing Asylum Appeals: 34 Ways to Improve Access to Justice at the First Tier Tribunal, published by the Public Law Project.
I previously worked as a researcher and communications manager for a research design consultancy in Addis Ababa. This role involved conducting research in post-conflict and displaced communities across East Africa for government agencies and NGOs including UNHCR, Mercy Corps and Samaritan's Purse. I also have a background in documentary film, and spent 3 years working for Mosaic Films in London.
