Alex is a Consultant in Renal Medicine at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust and a Senior Clinical Tutor at the University of Exeter Medical School. From 2014 to 2018, he was the Tony Wing Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Bristol, funded by Kidney Care UK and Kidney Research UK. His PhD thesis was entitled ‘The clinical and psychosocial status of young adults receiving renal replacement therapy in the United Kingdom’ and involved evidence synthesis, survival analysis in a registry dataset, survey analysis with general population comparator data and regression analysis to explore associations with key outcomes. His doctoral work was supervised by Prof Yoav Ben-Shlomo, Prof Fergus Caskey and Dr Carol Inward and recognised by the 2019 Raine Award.
From 2018 to 2021, Alex was an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Renal Medicine at the University of Bristol. During this time, he collaborated with Prof Paul Farrand (University of Exeter) to develop a preventative wellbeing intervention for people with kidney disease, delivered by an Assistant Wellbeing Practitioner (Renal), currently being evaluated in a feasibility trial. He developed international collaborations, including participating in the SONG-Kids Life Participation Expert Working Group, being a co-applicant on the Kidney Beam trial and being the independent chair of the Moodmaps study steering group. He gained an FHEA after completing the Cultivating Research-rich Education and Teaching Excellence scheme and is undertaking research supervision of Academic Clinical Fellows and MRes/MSc students.
