Management development

Line managers at the University, whether brand new or more experienced, can engage in ongoing management skills development through our range of specialist workshops, programmes and self-study resources. Learning topics include how to:

  • support and motivate your team
  • manage their performance and output
  • look after their wellbeing and development
  • feel more confident and effective in your management role

Line Managing @UoB induction programme

New line managers should enrol onto the 'Line Managing @UoB' induction programme in Develop, covering key topics such as organisational context, HR policy and process, diversity & inclusion and supporting and developing your staff. 

 

Leadership development

Build your leadership credentials, improve your strategic thinking and increase your influence and visibility across the organisation through our suite of annual leadership programmes and open workshops. 

Annual leadership programmes

The University operates a number of annual, cohort-based leadership programmes for academic and professional services staff at different stages of their leadership journey. These include:

  • FLi: for all women*, at any grade or career stage, to explore individual impact, develop an authentic leadership style, consider structural barriers to leadership and build confidence. (*Inclusive of cisgender women, trans women and non-binary people)
  • Leading Collaborative Teams: for aspiring and emerging leaders from across academic and professional services communities, helping to develop empowered and self-aware leaders who can nurture and sustain effective, collaborative teams. 
  • Bristol Senior Leaders: aiming to develop adaptive and resilient senior leaders from across all areas of the University, who can respond to future challenges and contribute to institutional leadership. 
  • Elevate: Award-winning, cross-institutional programme creating space for women of colour to explore their authentic leadership, increase their influence, understand the impact of historic and structural barriers and connect with each other powerfully.
  • 100 Black Women Professors NOW: talent pipeline programme for early, mid and advanced-career academics and PhD students who identify as women of Black African and/or Black Caribbean heritage.
  • South West Institution's Middle Managers Programme (SWIMM): a two-day, residential management programme for middle managers working in HE in South West universities.

Open workshops 

We regularly offer open workshops and initiatives on different themes of leadership, accessible to any member of staff with an interest in the subject. Find out more by logging into Develop

Leadership coaching

Dependent on role, University leaders may also access one-to-one coaching sessions to support with the opportunities and challenges of their roles. 

The Leadership Ethos framework

The Leadership Ethos is an online development tool and resource set designed to support the development of leadership skills in all of us at all career stages, as part of a positive and inclusive culture.

Induction

Members of staff can go to SharePoint to access the induction checklist and a list of the colleagues who support induction of new staff members in each area of the University.
