Cardiovascular disease risk in post-traumatic stress disorder: Untangling bidirectionality

13 July 2023, 3.30 PM - 13 July 2023, 4.30 PM

Dr Paul Marvar (Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology and Physiology, George Washington University)

OS6 Oakfield House and online

Hosted by the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a strong predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD), a major cause of death globally. Yet, the precise biological, behavioural, and causal connections between PTSD and CVD are uncertain. This seminar will explore the neurobiology and physiology of PTSD, focusing on emerging research into specific in tersecting neuroendocrine and inflammatory pathways, notably the renin angiotensin system (RAS) and the interleukin-6
(IL-6) pathway. I will present research pertaining to how these pathways may play important roles in further understanding the development and treatment of co-occurring PTSD and CVD.

Bio: Marvar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology at George Washington University (GWU). He holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at GWU and is part of the GWU Institute for Brain Health and Dementia. Prior to joining GWU, Dr Marvar obtained his PhD from West Virginia University in Physiology. During his PhD, he studied the mechanism(s) for how dietary salt impacts blood pressure function and regulation, and associated treatment implications for hypertension. Following this, Dr Marvar completed postdoctoral fellowships at Emory University and Bristol University.
