Dr Kate Whittington

Dr Kate Whittington is Graduate Education Director for the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Bristol. She completed her undergraduate degree here and went on to do a PhD, followed by two post-docs. Then she got the teaching bug as a lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

“I set up the distance-learning MSc in Reproduction and Development, the first of its kind at Bristol,” said Kate. “This has set a precedent for other distance-learning Masters degrees, such as the MScs in Stem Cells and Translational Cardiovascular Medicine.”

Kate applied to become the Faculty’s Graduate Education Director in 2011 when she was eightand a half months pregnant.

“I nearly didn’t apply. The timing wasn’t brilliant, but I’d wanted this role for some time. After chatting with my husband, I wrote and submitted my application on deadline day” she said.

“I was offered the job and was lucky enough to be able to accept it and still take my year’s planned maternity leave, as the faculty shared out the role with colleagues in the interim. I returned full-time, but working flexible hours, including one day from home each week, helping me to balance home and professional life.”

“The supportive stance of the faculty, along with invaluable support from my husband, has enabled me to do an exciting job but also to be there for my family.”
