My main research interests include: Saphenous vein bypass graft failure; beating heart (off-pump) coronary surgery; arterial revascularisation; mitral valve repair. The introduction and development of beating heart surgery (1995-to date) has involved: i) technical innovations, the conduct of prospective randomised trials and monitoring of early and late patient outcomes, ii) published evaluation confirming reduction of in-hospital mortality and major economic benefits to the Health Service by the adoption of this technique, and iii) mentoring of surgeons in this country and abroad
