Areas of expertise |
My research interests are broad, and I combine concepts from Geography, Biology and Chemistry to understand carbon cycle in lakes, streams and polar freshwaters. My research has concentrated in two broad areas. Firstly, I study microbes in the cryosphere. Against all expectations glaciers harbour a highly active microbial community. Bacteria, viruses and microscopic plants thrive in conditions that might be analogous to other planets and to early Earth. Second, I also study a range of climate (e.g., UV radiation and acid rain) and human impacts (e.g., mining and sewage) on freshwaters.

Media experience |
I have been involved in a number of outreach activities at the University of Bristol because research on polar regions is usually received with substantial excitement across different age groups. I have recently helped to produce a 45-min documentary (NERC funded from the grant NE/G00496X/1) together with BonneyFilms (http://www.bonneyfilms.com/), targeting A-level pupils about science in the Arctic (documentary entitled: Life on the Ice).
