Areas of expertise |
My research interests concern the ways in which social psychological influences, as opposed to “biological reality” construct health-related outcomes. I am particularly interested in understanding the ways in which individuals’ beliefs about their own bodies, abilities or illnesses can be constructed by the media or powerful others and how those beliefs can be to the disadvantage, in health-related terms, of the individuals who hold them. I am also interested in how changes in beliefs might lead to improvements in health and well-being without the need to wait for medical breakthroughs.
More specifically, I research the impact of changes in salient self-categories on the perception of “stress”, ‘flu, tinnitus, hearing handicap and other symptoms.
