Melanie R. Nilsson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD USA. After receiving an ACS Certified Chemistry BA with Honors at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, she briefly worked on opioid antagonists at the Research Triangle Institute. Her subsequent PhD work at SUNY Stony Brook was the start of an on-going passion for working with proteins that self-assemble into organized structures known as amyloid fibrils.
Upon completion of her PhD in 2000, she worked at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge where she continued her work on protein aggregation in Type 2 diabetes and other aging-associated diseases. She joined the faculty of McDaniel College in 2003, and the current focus of her research is on the synthesis of uniform, functional amyloid fibrils that can be used for nanotechnology applications.
She will be working with Professor Dek Woolfson in the School of Chemistry on the Design and Characterisation of Biologically Inspired Nanostructured Functional Materials.
Dr Nilsson will be presenting a research student seminar on the Role of Deamidation in Fibril Nucleation and Surface Mapping at 4pm, Wednesday 16 March, W415, School of Chemistry, Cantock's Close.
